With a total of more than 500 speakers presenting on a range of issues related to transforming health through IT, the HIMSS ’16 Conference & Exhibition provided plenty of opportunities to learn, explore ideas and share insights.
While it would be an impossible feat to distill that all down into a short summary, these three specific themes stood out as significant trends that we’re continuing to follow:
1. Accelerate Change with Cloud Technology
HIMSS ’16 was the first chance for many to get a look at what the Salesforce Health Cloud can do faster and better than building your own patient relationship solution. As a system of engagement that goes beyond the EHR and brings the patient relationship to the forefront, Health Cloud is poised to be a true transformational force for any group that is responsible for managing a patient population.
Several pilot customers were on site for the official launch to speak about their experiences as the first wave of Health Cloud customers. We’re looking forward to being part of this next step in Salesforce’s strategy of helping organizations leverage technology to build stronger relationships throughout the healthcare continuum.
2. Focus on Interoperability
While care is becoming more collaborative and patient-centered, legacy EHR systems have been slow to open up. The focus on interoperability reflects a growing emphasis on the critical need to be able to collect both clinical and non-clinical information from disparate sources and bring it all together to create a “single version of the truth” for patients. It’s also clear that EHRs alone are not adequate to meet the benchmarks required for value-based care.
The issues discussed at HIMSS ’16 surrounding the challenges of interoperability echo what we’ve been hearing with our clients and from our discussions with healthcare leaders. The bottom line is that organizations need innovative solutions to connect these systems. We believe our new middleware application, V12 CONNECT, a will play a major role as it allows the seamless exchange and integration of data in Salesforce and other database systems. More to come about its role in healthcare soon.
3. Embrace Care Management
The shift to value-based care demands that providers and payers proactively manage the care of their member populations. While some are attempting to do this with legacy systems (or even spreadsheets), this is a cumbersome, inefficient approach that leaves the door open to many opportunities for error.
At HIMSS ’16 we heard it again and again: The organizations that have been successful in managing and delivering value-based care have embraced patient-centered technology solutions that enable them to track and communicate with members to drive outcomes. These technologies allow those who are managing populations to see patient trends in real-time and communicate with these patients in a HIPAA-compliant way to steer them towards better health. We’re proud to say many of our clients are on the leading edge in this area.
